Politics: The Aftermath and Countries Involved

The explosion at Chernobyl left the planet with the biggest mess humankind has ever made. Unlike the messes left by earthquakes, volcanoes, tidal waves, and wars, this one cannot be cleaned up. Unless some unforeseen technology finds a way to sweep up the isotopes and somehow convert them to harmless atoms, Chernobyl's radioactivity will probably outlive civilization.

Given the seriousness of the problem - the thousands of lives at stake, the billions of dollars involved - it is only natural for blame to fly wild and clues to the truth to be hidden, distorted, and destroyed.

Today, the steel-and-concrete sarcophagus still stands around the ruins of Reactor Four. Somehow it must remain intact for the next several thousand years. Much of the fuel that melted poured into the basement of the building. No one has actually seen - to go anywhere near it would result in instant death.

On December 13, 2000, United Nations approved a $585 million loan to help Ukraine complete construction of two reactors intended to replace electricity production loss with shutting down the Chernobyl.
